Welcome to "The Edge" blog for Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sammamish, Wa. This is for our 6th-8th graders and their families and friends to keep up on all the things are youth group is up to. New people are always welcome! Join us!
This summer, in addition to our Sunflower “Peace Gardens”, we have
planted Zucchini to grow for the Issaquah Food Bank. They are thrilled at the prospect of fresh
produce from MQP!
Please click on the "VolunteerSpot" button to sign your
family and friends up to water and weed one weekend (or several) this summer. You’ll find gardening instructions on our VolunteerSpot page. Gardening with The Edge and MQP's Garden Committee is easy, fun, a community
builder, and feeds others!
An Edge Youth Group / Garden Committee collaboration.
All parishioners are welcome to join us!
Dress for the dirt! See below for a look back on how it all started last year.
Please check back, as we will post a link so that you and your friends/family may sign up for a day sometime this summer to do the weeding and watering, etc. Many hands make light work... and beautiful, happy looking sunflowers!
March 10, 2012:
Congratulations to "The Edge" Youth Group for winning the Seattle Archdiocese Youth Service Award for their 6-month long "Peace Garden" initiative with the church's garden committee! The project was entitled “Sowing Seeds of Peace – Harvesting an Abundant Crop”. It was so nice to have youth and adults working side by side on this initiative to talk about how we need to sow seeds of peace wherever we go. Check out the video below this picture to see the evolution of the garden from Good Friday, April 22nd to October 30, 2012.

What a great year! We had almost 200 middle schoolers, 14 dedicated adult small group leaders, and a legion of volunteers who helped with the meals ministry every week, along with many who helped drive/chaperone to numerous events and walk with our youth on their faith journey.
This Sunday marks the end of our regular Edge season. We have a SUPER COOL NIGHT planned that your kids won't want to miss! It is also moving up night for registered 5th graders. 8th graders who are already registered members of Edge should most definitely come to say goodbye to Edge, and HELLO! to the high school youth group later in the evening!
Families of 5th graders and older "moving up night" registrants: Watch for an email from Anne on Friday, May 4th with more information about this Sunday.
After the Season Finale, we have plenty of fun things coming up.
Next week: Saturday, May 12: 10 AM to 11 AM: Join us in planting a Peace Garden at MQP!
July 9-13: EDGE-stravaganza! A week of faith-filled fun! More info coming soon. Scroll to the beginning of July, 2011 in our blog to see examples of what we did last year.
Watch for another "Strengths Explorer" event to be scheduled sometime this summer.
And parents, please email Anne if you're interested in joining a committee to review "Theology of the Body" programming materials to develop a program appropriate and engaging to our middle schoolers.
We had a
full house on a glorious sunny day! And
we raised $2023 to help 18 middle schoolers give one week to God on a mission
trip to Forks, WA this summer. Thank you
so much to our “cast, crew, and audience”!
We are so grateful to all who participated in making this a great event!
Here are a couple of videos that won rave reviews! Stop back next week to see if we've posted more!
Looking forward to seeing all you Edge regulars at our GRAND FINALE this Sunday!
God +(object/you) = Holy : God is in the “Holiness Equation”
God’s
presence makes SOMETHING or SOMEONE HOLY.
Set apart… for a purpose
Another aspect of being Holy is being set apart – separated, differentiated, unique
–based on God-given qualities.
Holiness Magnifies God.
Jesus is our best and perfect model.
Pope
Benedict said – when he was talking to teens like you – Holiness is not about
YOU making yourself perfect. “Holiness
is not some sort of self-made perfection – it is union with the love of Christ”
I was born a "grotesque" orphan (see www.abetterlifebook.blogspot.com). A loving family took me in as a tiny seed with no promise, they nurtured me and still shower me with love. It is with deep gratitude I pay it forward every day. I have worked with kids since I was a kid. In high school I was teaching religious ed to kindergartners. I've served on the pastoral council at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Excelsior, MN. I started a middle school youth group at St. Hubert's Catholic Church in Chanhassen, MN. And much, much more! I moved from MN to IA to TX to WA in the span of 6 years, and have firmly planted my roots now here in WA. I was a high-tech executive recruiter for nearly 20 years. I started a nonprofit that helps kids help others called RandomKid in 2005 (I'm a volunteer and cofounder with a 15 yr old girl). Here's a video from the L'Oreal Paris Women of Worth Awards about it: www.tinyurl.com/annewow
